At Northern Private School, we start the school year working on sounds and letters of the alphabet, as well as short- and long-vowel sounds. This helps kindergarteners and 1st and 2nd graders in the after-school class learn to read short words.

Next, we move onto blends. The students use A Beka blend charts, numbers 1 – 8. This enables them to read longer words. The goal is to make the children read at a 1st grade or age-appropriate level.

In mathematics, students learn addition and subtraction, coin value, and mathematic terminologies such as before, after, and between. We will also teach them how to tell time, such as the hour, half past the hour, quarter past the hour, and quarter till the hour.
